JUST THE WAY NATURE INTENDED!

Our hotbed has produced its first harvest of
salad greens!

This has helped supplement lunchtime meals supplied to our fabulous Volunteers on Mondays & Tuesdays.

Currently maintaining a temperature of around 18ºC, we are looking forward to our next crop to graze on.

Hotbeds have been popular since Victorian times & provides bottom heat, using manure rather than electricity as the heat source speeding up plant growth of seedlings & tender plants.

The best organic matter for heating up a hotbed is said to be horse manure, however personally we have had more success using fresh cow manure.

 There’s just no comparison to home grown
 veg in our eyes.

 
 JEFFS GARDENING CORNER
April is a ‘let’s go for it!’ month but proceed with caution. Even if the days are warm, there is always a risk of frost at night:
  • Plant first early potatoes 
  • Sow under cover celeriac, courgettes, squashes, pumpkins & marrows, as well as leeks.
  • Beetroot & carrots can be sown directly outside
  • Prepare seed beds for outdoor sowing of main crop vegetables next month.
