Eco-art Perform//Print artist Elizabeth Tomos

Workshop Summary

Join Eco-art Perform//Print artist Elizabeth Tomos for a series of workshops this April. Each week we will focus on a different aspect: Trees / Water & Air / Earth & Stone / Humans / Non-Humans.

The session will include: a foraging walk to gather materials and interact with nature; a new printing technique each week, working with beautiful natural materials; a well-being exercise with Sammuel (drumming, breathing, singing bowls) and a group discussion about the climate crisis. There will also be some delicious treats from the award-winning Loving Chef Natasha.

“I am really delighted to have been selected as the artist for this project. Sol Haven does amazing work and I am really looking forward to being able to use my artistic practice to support them, as well as to broaden and deepen climate change-related work in the local area.” Artist Elizabeth Tomos.

IN CONTACT WITH TREES: WEEK 1 (3/6 APR)

This Eco-art workshop will focus on issues of climate crisis connected to the preservation of trees (particularly ancient and deciduous).

  • Activities:
Walk around the grounds of Sol Haven (Wed) and Delapre (Sat), interacting with the trees and gathering print materials. What have the trees seen? What stories can they tell? The walk will include a grounding meditation with drumming.

  • Printing using beautiful home-made, plant-based inks on rice and rag papers, you will be introduced to Elizabeth’s contact printing method. You will create pieces you can take home and have an opportunity to contribute to an artist’s book.

  • Discuss as a group our feelings about climate change, what can we do to make a difference and how do we deal with climate anxiety?

IN CONTACT WITH AIR & WATER: WEEK 2 (10/13 APR)

This Eco-art workshop will focus on issues of climate crisis around water and air pollution.

  • Activities:
Walk around the grounds of Sol Haven (Wed) and Delapre (Sat) interacting with the water sources on site. The walk will include grounding mediation and deep listening exercises.

Printing using our beautiful home-made inks again, this time using methods that use and respond to water: wax resist and water-based ink mark-making.

  • Discuss our feelings about water and air pollution, how can we use our voices to affect positive change? How do we approach these discussions with the next generation.

IN CONTACT WITH EARTH & STONE: WEEK 3 (17/20 APR)
This Eco-art workshop will focus on issues of climate crisis around soil and mineral extraction but also looking at positive moves forward such as permaculture and rewilding.

Activities:

  • Gardening we will plant seedlings at Sol Haven (Wed) and at the community garden at the Umbrella Pavilion (Sat). This week we will focus on wellbeing through direct connection to the soil and living things.
  • Printing using earth-based pigments, we will develop the contact printmaking method from workshop one working with stones and seeds.
  • Discuss the issues around how we take from the earth and what we can give back. An intruduction to permaculture principals and how they are more than just gardening!

IN CONTACT WITH HUMANS: WEEK 4 (10/13 APR)

This Eco-art workshop will focus on how climate change affects human bodies – migration, refugee crisis and famine. But also how we can form strong communities to respond to these changes.

  • Activities:
Movement activities around Sol Haven (Wed) and the Umbrella Pavillion (Sat) that get us in touch with our bodies, including sound based methods for grounding and healing.
  • Printing this week we will truly be getting in contact with out beautiful materials, taking prints directly from the body! We will also look at integrating text into our work.
  • Discuss how do we approach these difficult conversations? How is it possible to be a compassionate human in a world so full of seemingly impossible situations.

IN CONTACT WITH NON-HUMANS: WEEK 5 (1/4 MAY)

This Eco-art workshop will focus on on diminishing biodiversity and decreasing wildlife created by the climate crisis.

Activities:

  • Walk around the grounds of Sol Haven (Wed) and the urban environment around The Lab (Sat), considering the perspectives of non-human life, using movement techniques that connect us with the non-human.
  • Printing using our plant-based inks we will take inspiration from the animal world to create colourful textures on our armada of collograph newts.
  • Discuss as a group our feelings about climate change, how can we support non-human ecologies and find ways to re-wild our environments?
